Speed Development Camps
Speed Development Camps are small group training sessions designed to help young athletes improve their acceleration, sprint mechanics and overall running speed.
These camps provide a focused coaching environment where athletes can learn the key elements of sprinting while developing their confidence and enjoyment of running fast.
Camps are coached by an experienced sprint coach who has developed Northern Ireland and Ulster and Irish medalists as well as junior international athletes.
Who These Camps Are For?
Speed Development Camps are suitable for athletes aged 14+ who want to improve their speed for:
athletics sprint events
football
rugby
GAA
hockey and other field sports
Athletes do not need previous sprint training experience, only an interest in improving their speed and running performance.
What Athletes Will Learn
During the camp athletes will work on the key elements of sprint performance, including:
acceleration and starting mechanics
sprint posture and running efficiency
stride rhythm and max velocity mechanics
speed drills used by competitive sprinters
Athletes may also experience training tools used in sprint development such as:
electronic timing gates
sprint drills and wicket runs
resisted sprint training
Athlete Testing and Performance Report
As part of the Speed Development Camp, each athlete will take part in a small number of performance tests designed to measure key elements of speed and power.
These tests help athletes understand their current performance level and allow them to see where improvements can be made.
Performance Testing May Include
10m sprint time – measuring acceleration and first-step speed
30m sprint time – measuring sprint development and running speed
Vertical jump test – measuring explosive power
Testing is conducted using professional training equipment including electronic timing gates and an electronic jump mat.
Athlete Performance Report
At the end of the camp, each athlete will receive a simple performance report card outlining their test results.
The report will include:
sprint times and jump test results
a short summary of the athlete’s performance
coaching notes highlighting areas for improvement
suggestions for developing speed and sprint mechanics
The performance report provides athletes with clear feedback and a benchmark they can use to track their improvement over time.
Group Size
Camps are limited to small groups of 4–8 athletes to allow high quality coaching and individual feedback.
When Camps Run
Speed Development Camps are typically organised during school holiday periods throughout the year.
